Problems with scabies have existed as long as people have existed. Even though they are an old problem, they are no less bothersome today. Finding the right scabies over the counter remedy is possible for many.
Scabies are the result of ectoparasites. Simply stated, they involve microscopic mites burrowing under the skin. Symptoms often will not appear until several weeks after exposure. They cause a terrible itching accompanied by a rash and small bumps. They can be mistaken for hives or a rash. The cause of the itch is the mite fecal material in the skin. It causes your skin to have an allergic response.
Sometimes you can see the insects or nits (eggs). Usually, however, they are difficult for even your doctor to see. Once you have an infestation, everyone with whom you come in contact can become infected. Treatment should be started as soon as you know you have the infestation.
Your primary medical provider can prescribe medicine or creams for the condition. If there are reasons you prefer not to go to a doctor, there are many over the counter treatments available. Some people have had excellent success using these easily accessible products.
The most typical treatment is the use of a permethrin cream. Piperonyl butoxide can also be used. Some people use a lotion or shampoo made with lindane, but this is not the first choice. For one thing, it works slowly, and for another, it has been shown to have some bad side effects. Pyrethrins have also been effective for some people.
Some people believe in using only natural ingredients. A paste made from neem and tumeric has worked for some. Tea oil can also be used. Using a sulfur based soap with at least 10% sulfur, or combining sulfur with Vaseline and using on your skin can help. Since the eggs may be dormant when you first treat yourself, you will probably need another treatment in 7-10 days.
Scabies is contagious, so your whole family will probably be affected. They should all undergo treatment. Good hygiene measures should be used including washing clothes, towels, and bedding in hot water in which bleach has been added. Brushes and combs should be treated with hot, bleach water as well. Try to avoid spreading the infestation to others. Stay out of public places, especially places like schools, nursing homes, schools, etc. Remember it can be spread quite easily.
Scabies are never fully cured even though you will get rid of the symptoms. They will remain dormant in the body, and can return. You need to keep up effective personal hygiene, and keep away from known infestations.
The itching associated with scabies can be extremely irritating. Scratching can lead to serious infections, that will need a prescribed antibiotic. Going to a doctor may be a good choice, but finding the right scabies over the counter remedy is possible for some.
